Seasonal decor spends eleven months in a box and one month on display, so storage matters more than cleaning. Most pieces that get thrown away were not worn out; they were creased, musty or crushed.

Cleaning, by material

• Printed polyester. The bulk of the range. Cold machine wash on a gentle cycle, no bleach, hang or tumble low. Printed patterns dislike high heat more than they dislike water.
• Burlap and linen-look. Spot-clean with a damp cloth and let it dry flat. Machine washing relaxes the weave and the piece never sits the same again.
• Outdoor flags. Rinse the dust off with a hose, dry fully before folding. A flag boxed damp is a flag with mildew in March.
• Paper and card items. Banners, signs and sticker sheets simply need to stay flat and dry.

Folding and boxing

• Roll, do not fold, anything printed. A cardboard tube or a pool noodle keeps a runner crease-free for years. Folding puts a permanent white line across the pattern.
• One box per occasion. Label it by date, not by contents. Next October you will be looking for "Halloween", not for "orange banner".
• Keep it off the floor. Concrete floors sweat; a shelf or a pallet is enough.
• Slip in a note. What you were missing this year, written down in the box, is worth more next year than any reminder app.

What genuinely wears out

Two things do not survive indefinitely and are worth replacing rather than storing: outdoor flags after two or three seasons of direct sun, and plastic table covers, which are practically single-use. Everything else in the range is a multi-year piece if it is dried before it is boxed.

Replacing something? The year index lists every occasion, and the order calendar says when the shelf will still be full.
